Amelia Brodka Interview (November 2008)

How were you introduced to skateboarding and what got you started?

The first time I was exposed to a skateboard, I was immediately drawn to it. My brother got one shortly after we moved to the US from Poland. I would steal it when he wasn’t around and ride around on my knees. He didn’t like me using it because I “wasn’t doing it right.” It wasn’t long before it got run over by a car, and he never got a new one. Years later, I saw one of my friends rolling around and I said “That looks hard, can you teach me?”

Do you remember what your first setup was?

Andrew Reynolds Birdhouse.

Were there any early influences on your skating?

Tony Hawk, Cara-Beth Burnside and Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins.

What is the best and worst thing about your hometown?

Best is family & friends, worst is good skate spots are few and far between.

Besides skateboarding, what do you like to do in your spare time?

Exploring places I’ve never been to, making pottery, drawing, adventuring with friends, reading.

What is your typical day like?

Go to class, skate, study and go out with friends.

Do you prefer to skate with guys or girls?

Anyone fun with a lot of energy.

Where do you like to skate?

Culver City, Chino, Rye Airfield, USC campus, Woodward West, Florida, Oregon, everything everywhere.

Who do you like to skate with?

Good friends, Chris Peterson, the Rye crew, the Woodward West staff, Steve Cab, Lester Kasai, Lance Mountain, fun people.

What kind of music do you listen to?

When I’m skating, it’s gotta be electronica/house or something equally exciting, otherwise, mostly indie-type tunes.

What is something most people don’t know about you?

I’m majoring in Communication and minoring in Neuroscience at USC.

So far, what have been the highlights of your skateboarding career?

Sessioning with and getting to know pros I’ve looked up to for years, moving to California, traveling, meeting new people & seeing new places.

What do you have planned for this year?

Skate more, compile a legit video part, do all the big bowl events, do more street events and more vert events.

Shout outs and thanks?

Mom, Dad, Mike & Matt, the Libby-Bean family, Tanya Oleskowicz , The Petersons, Jim Gray, Beau Lambert & everyone else who helped me out, thanks!
