Annie Guglia Interview (January 2009)

How were you introduced to skateboarding and what got you started?

My little brother got a skateboard for Christmas in 2000…I guess I just thought it looked cool so one day I went to the skatepark near my house and I saw Anne-Sophie Julien. She taught me how to drop in a 2-foot mini and I was stoked!

Do you remember what your first setup was?

This World Industries “Flameboy” board with plastic trucks; which was my brother’s old setup. He gave it to me because he got a brand new Looney Tunes board instead! I was kinda pissed off.

Were there any early influences on your skating?

Anne-Sophie Julien and Margaux Walker were my favorite skaters for a long time! Then I saw the movie Yeah Right in 2004 and I was like…WTF!!!

What is the best and worst thing about your hometown?

The best thing about it is the whole summertime. The worst is winter. NO ME GUSTA LA NIEVE!

Besides skateboarding, what do you like to do in your spare time?

I work and go to school…so that takes a lot of time. Otherwise, I see my boyfriend, read, go out and drink a couple beers with my friends…just normal stuff I guess haha.

What is your typical day like?

Wake up, eat, go to school/work, eat, skate, sleep.

Do you prefer to skate with guys or girls?

It doesn’t matter…but I usually skate with guys so girls sessions once in a while are fun.

Where do you like to skate?

Downtown Montreal, or my local park Ahutnsic! It sucks…I KNOW! But we always have the best sessions ever there haha.

Who do you like to skate with?

Anybody who has a good vibe…like the skirtboarders or my homies in Ahuntsic.

What kind of music do you listen to?

Anything, really. From Louis Armstrong to M.I.A.

What is something most people don’t know about you?

I’ve never landed a fakie heelflip. HAHA.

So far, what have been the highlights of your skateboarding career?

I’d say the whole year 2008. I went to Mexico with the Skirtboarders and it was super fun, I went to Barcelona for skating, I went to some other places for competitions or just for fun, and now, I just got home from California! I’ve never travelled that much my whole life and I love it!

What do you have planned for this year?

A lot of travels again! Hopefully.

Shout outs and thanks?

Thanks to YN, Elo, the Skirtboarders, people from Axis, Circa and Orkus Skatepark before (RIP!!), the crew from my job, and also people who helped me in any way during my life. And obviously, mommy, daddy and the whole family!
