Cindy Whitehead’s “GIRL is NOT a 4 Letter Word” complete available July!
A lifelong Southern California girl, Cindy Whitehead conquered the male dominated profession of pro vert skateboarding in the 70’s, becoming one of the only women ever to be featured riding vert in the centerfold of a skateboarding magazine. Since then Cindy has gone on to coin the term “Sports Stylist,” working with companies like Gatorade, Nike, the NBA, and athletes like Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant and Mia Hamm. Last year she made headlines by skateboarding down the closed 405 fwy in Los Angeles and now she has her own skateboard collaboration “GIRL is NOT a 4 Letter Word” with the biggest company in skateboarding – Dwindle Inc. She’s chosen to use this collaboration to give back, by donating a portion of the proceeds to GRO “Girl Riders Organization”.
Cindy will be speaking June 22, 2013, the day after National Go Skateboarding day, at the INNOSKATE event at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC, along with Tony Hawk & Rodney Mullen.
Cindy Whitehead started skateboarding in the 70s at the age 14 at Hermosa Pier doing Freestyle, but quickly switched to vert at Skateboard World in Torrance. At the age of 16 Cindy turned pro and became one of the few female Pros of the time and rode for Tracker Trucks, Sims Skateboards, Puma Tennis Shoes, Rector and Fly-a-Way Helmets. She quickly earned herself the distinction of being one of the top ranked professional female vert skateboarders in the U.S. for pool riding and the half-pipe. To this day, Cindy still holds the distinction of being the only female to be featured in an article and centerfold in the same issue of a skateboarding magazine and the only female skateboarder to be sponsored by Puma.
With almost no girl skateboarding contests in 2012, not much has changed since the 70s. “The younger generation is asking for more female boarder coverage, so why aren’t we giving it to them? Why are we not promoting women skaters all this time and especially now?”
Dusters California, which originated from the heart and soul of skateboarding and embraces the heritage of the California skate and surf lifestyle, agrees.
Cindy and Duster’s creative director Nano Nobrega collaborated to design the board “GIRL IS NOT A 4 LETTER WORD.” In conjunction with Longboarding for Peace, the board not only acknowledges, but encourages ALL female skaters. A portion of the proceeds will go to GRO (Girls Riders Organization), a non-profit that helps to inspire, educate and support girls in action sports.
With Cindy’s original artwork and lettering done in neon and metallic ink, and a skull embedded in the custom grip tape, the board will launch at the 2013 Vans Warped Tour and be available in stores in July.
So what advice does Cindy have for future female skaters? “Live life balls to the wall. Do epic shit. Take every dare that comes your way. You can sleep when you’re dead.”
