Renata Ruiz Interview (January 2009)
How were you introduced to skateboarding and what got you started?
I saw it in the streets and I liked it a lot, so I started skating in Mexico City with my cousin.
Do you remember what your first setup was?
My first board was a Hoocops, very broken one with Venture trucks and nice white wheels.
Were there any early influences on your skating?
As soon as I saw people skate I knew I wanted to skate.
What is the best and worst thing about your hometown?
The best thing about my city are the spots, there are a lot more spots compared to other cities. The worst is the parties.
Besides skateboarding, what do you like to do in your spare time?
When I am not skating I am painting, reading, talking or just having fun.
What is your typical day like?
A typical day is a nice meal and a big day of skateboarding.
Do you prefer to skate with guys or girls?
I really enjoy skating with girls because I don’t get to very often, but I don’t care really if it’s a girl or a boy. I like to skate with nice people who really love to skate.
Where do you like to skate?
I always like to skate different spots. I like benches, banks, and transitions.
Who do you like to skate with?
I like to skate with my hometown El Green Team, Vanessa, the other Skirtboarders and anyone who loves to skate.
What kind of music do you listen to?
I love to hear rap, electronic music and rock. Like Peaches, Erik El Niño, Depeche Mode and a lot more.
What is something most people don’t know about you?
Most people don’t know that I lived in Germany when I was 11 years old, which probably opened my mind so much that it made me want to skate after.
So far, what have been the highlights of your skateboarding career?
The hardest thing was to survive the two years that I couldn’t skate because of a knee injury, doctors and the operation. The highlights have been being a Skirtboarder, placing 2nd in the Chick Flip contest, being one of only 2 girls (Mayra the other) who have had a photos in the Mexican skate magazine Urbe and traveling all around Mexico with the boys.
What do you have planned for this year?
My plans are to dedicate this year to skateboarding. I want get sponsors to go to California for some real competitions this year. I want to travel as much as possible.
