Jessica Florencio Interview (February 2012)
How were you introduced to skateboarding and what got you started?
I always liked sports. I met a boy at school who skated and we became friends, he invited us to skate every Saturday. I started skating with my cousin and that’s where it all began.
Were there any early influences on your skating?
Yes, my school friend that skated.
What is the best and worst thing about your hometown?
The city has a small skate park that is great and is close to my house, but the worst is there is not much to skate because the city is planing.
Besides skateboarding, what do you like to do in your spare time?
I would like to start going to college to study Physical Education, but for the moment I have to dedicate myself to skateboarding the fullest.
What is your typical day like?
I usually wake up at 8:30 am, have a coffee on the way to the gym, lunch, get on the internet for a little while, help my mother with some chores, skate, then go to the club pool with friends have fun playing or swimming and at night I’m on the net or watching a movie. Every Wednesday I have an English class and I go to church on Saturday with my friends to relax a little.
Where do you like to skate?
I like hanging out with friends at the skate park in my town.
What was the first contest you entered?
It was on September 7, 2005 here in my town. I participated with the boys because they had no female category, it went well and I ended up in second place.
Do you like skating contests? Favorite contest?
Yes, I like contests because it gives you more incentive to practice and progress. My favorite competition was the X-Games because it is one of the biggest contests in skateboarding.
Where has skateboarding allowed you to travel? Which is your favorite?
Skateboarding has allowed me to travel to U.S., Mexico, Europe, Argentina and several states of Brazil. I liked Europe the best because the region is beautiful and has lots to skate.
If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you go?
I wish I could go back to Europe and see the city of Paris, because I always saw in the movies how the city and beautiful.
What kind of music do you listen to?
I like a little of everything, but my favorites are the sounds of John Mayer, Skillet, Charlie Brown Jr. and Coldplay.
What is something most people don’t know about you?
I believe that I always show through and I am what I am, it’s hard to say something that most do not know about me.
So far, what have been some of the highlights of your skateboarding?
In 2010 I was in 3rd place Supergirl Jam in Venice, California. In 2011 I competed in the Word Cup Skateboarding contests and got 3rd place in the World Ranking, then won the Best Trick in the Skate Girls Street Show and South American in Argentina.
What do you have planned for this year?
This year I plan to train a lot, compete in Word Cup Skateboarding contests in the U.S. and Europe, go to other countries and add new sponsors. I would also like to go on several more female skate tours, take pictures, shoot a lot, improve my English and at the end of year have a lot of fun with friends and my family.
